On-going, Wed-Fri, 7PM-2AM Sat. 7PM-3AM, Sonotheque, Sonotheque owes its distinct flavor to its no-nonsense proprietors -- restaurateurs Terry Alexander and Donnie Madia and longtime music man Joe Bryl. Nightly, Sonotheque strives to offer rare grooves spun by local, national and international stars. Bryl himself has been known to kick off weekends by throwing his fave tunes on the turntables. Underground and deep house, techno and Afrobeat, electronica and world tunes are all appreciated by the diverse crowd, varying from young professionals to old-school house heads, Free, 1444 W Chicago Ave Chicago, IL 60622, tel: 312-226-7600

On-going, Sun., Tue.-Fri. 9PM-2AM Sat. 9PM-3AM closed Mon., Funky Buddha Lounge, The Buddha. That's what the regulars call this dinky little corner bar that's exploded into the hippest and most-cutting edge night spot in the city. There's not much to it (four small rooms, three small bars), the exotic furnishings look haphazardly placed on the walls and around the rooms, and the washrooms are a bit raggedy. But that constant line outside the club is no joke. The atmosphere at Funky Buddha Lounge is warm and intimate, and everybody wants to get in on the action. DJs spin just about everything that's hot, hip and happening, including classic soul, hip-hop, house, Latin, dance hall, and even a little New Wave. And who says Chicagoans don't have style? At The Buddha, the latest looks -- and not just those regurgitated from the magazines - - are on display here, Fee:$15 Thursday; $20 Friday & Saturday, 728 W Grand Ave Chicago, IL 60610, tel: 312-666-1695

On-going, Thu-Fri 9PM-4AM, Sat 9PM-5AM, Sun 9PM-4AM, Republic Nightclub, Marc Bortz flips the script on his sprawling Lincoln Park nightclub once again. This time he partners with longtime club owner Ed Tunney (Club 720) and promoter Henry Cardenas (CMN Events), turning the former Biology Bar into something that aims to appeal to the masses. The 11,000-square-foot Republic features two dance floors as well as several unique lounge spaces. A large stage and state-of-the-art sound system allows for live concerts, but on most nights DJs will spin everything from hip-hop, rock, house and Latin fare, 1520 N Fremont St Chicago, IL 60622, tel: 312-397-0580

On-going, Sun.-Fri. 11AM-2AM Sat. 11AM-3AM, Galway Arms, This Irish pub and restaurant in Lincoln Park joins a score of like-minded spots offering similar features, including traditional Irish fare, live Irish bands and an atmosphere paying tribute to the homeland. Though Galway hopes to attract more upscale customers by offering fine-dining options in its upstairs restaurant, the bar tends to get the usual Lincoln Park bar hoppers, who come for typical pub grub, spectacular pints of Guinness and DJs who spin contemporary music on the weekends. Good menu choices include steak, seafood and pasta dishes, traditional Irish brunch items, and hearty salads such as the champagne-salmon salad. Galway is a year-round favorite where you can snuggle with a significant other by the fireplace during winter months or bask on the roomy patio in the summer with pitchers of strawberry-lemonade vodka, 2442 N Clark St Chicago, IL 60614, tel: 773-472-5555

On-going, Mon 5-10:30PM, Wed-Thu 5-10:30PM, Fri-Sat 5-11:30PM, Sun 5-10PM, closed Tuesday, Cotes du Rhone Bistro, At Brian Moulton's comfortable Edgewater restaurant, you'll find more than just standard French bistro fare on the menu. He made a name for himself as the longtime chef at Cafe Bernard in Lincoln Park, so expect to see some of his signature dishes such as a classic cassoulet and bouillabaisse at Cotes du Rhone Bistro, Fee:$15-$25, 5423 N Broadway Chicago, IL 60640, tel: 773-293-2683

On-going, Mon-Fri 4PM-2AM, Sat 9PM-3AM, Live Smooth Jazz, There's no shortage of jazz bars in Chicago; in fact there's an abundance of straight-up, be-bop, avant guard and classic clubs in the city. But what was missing was the ''smooth jazz'' joint, which fans could only hear when their favorite WNUA-FM (95.5 FM) artist hit one of the downtown venues, 416 S Clark St Chicago, IL 60605, tel: 312-385-1111

thru 01/31/2008, Thu, Mexicanidad: Our Past is Present This exhibition chronologically follows the history of Mexican culture and the changes, struggles and triumphs it has endured throughout time. Various types of art are included in this exhibit that attest to the diversity and versatility of Mexican art. Mexican Fine Arts Center and Museum, tel: (312) 738-1503

thru 03/9/2008, Sun, The Ancient Americas, The Ancient Americas tells the epic story of human life on the American continents, from the arrival of small groups of hunter-gatherers, whose way of life survived into the 20th century, to the great but fragile empires of the Aztecs and the Incas. On-going: Sankofa- A Century of African American Expression in the Decorative Arts Ongoing, Sankofa- A Century of African American Expression in the Decorative Arts presents visitors with a unique opportunity to view the stylistic range and creativity of early African American craftsmen from approximately 1790 to 1890. This exhibition has a special significance because of the limited number of historical records available that tell an objective story of the lives of African Americans. The objects/ artifacts featured in Sankofa, help to dispel the stereotypical image of blacks in early American life, where they are portrayed as unintelligent agricultural workers and unimaginative urban laborers. The artistic accomplishments of the artisans in this exhibition demonstrate their ability to be creative in the face of adversity, support their families, and contribute to their communities by practicing their craft. It is a body of work that defines the fragmentary history of a once prominent African American community, known first as Freedmantown and later as North Dallas. Interactive video kiosks present a menu of options and enable the viewer to gain an understanding of the life experiences of different individuals, who grew up in Freedmantown and old North Dallas. These are supplemented by vintage photography, newspapers, snap shots, 8mm-film footage, archival documents, business directories, maps, and other ephemera that help to elucidate the broader context of community life. The exhibit brings together public and private collections and is presented in different thematic areas: Slavery, Emancipation, Reconstruction, Early Families, Education, Medicine, Religion, Business, and Community Pride.
